Episode 10: Stephen B. Harrison
For our 10th episode of Hydrogen Insight, we welcomed back Stephen B. Harrison, Founder and Managing Director at sbh4, to discuss hydrogen production from biomass and waste.
Biomass is derived from various natural products including wood, solid agricultural waste, or domestic sewage. The general distinction between biomass and waste is that pre-consumer feedstocks are referred to as biomass and waste is typically post-consumer feedstock. A good example is a tree that has been freshly cut will be defined as biomass while a table made out of that same tree will be considered waste. Nonetheless, the definition of what is defined as biomass or waste varies geographically.
Hydrogen can be produced from biomass in different methods. Gasification is a process that produces a mix of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide along with hydrogen. Pyrolysis of biomass produces these gases, biochar and pyrolysis oils. Hydrogen can also be produced through methane pyrolysis, a process where it is separated from methane created from the anaerobic digestion of biomass to form biogas. Another promising technique is dry methane reforming, although it is presently relatively undeveloped. Biomass can also be incinerated to generate electrical power for electrolysis.
The efficiency of producing hydrogen from biomass will be determined by factors such as geographical location and production method. No matter what method is used, precautions must be taken to capture carbon and other greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide (which is approximately 250 times more harmful than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas) as well as to ensure that the entire process is climate-friendly.
