Episode 11: Terry Tamminen

 

This session of H2 Insight featured Terry Tamminen, an environmental advocate, author, legislator and a pioneering visionary for the development of the California Hydrogen Highway initiative. 

 

 

 

 

This session of Hydrogen Insight covered several topics related to California’s hydrogen sector as well as Terry’s pioneering role as a long-time hydrogen advocate. He began with a discussion of the centrality of California’s ports for logistics across the US, transportation emissions, and the importance of decarbonization of the sector not only for fighting climate change but also for improving public health.

 

The discussion later turned towards hydrogen production within California, and efforts underway to increase the proportion of green hydrogen production. Specific mention was given to utilizing steam reformation of biogas, such as methane from sewage treatment, and organic waste, which can even have a lower carbon intensity than hydrogen made through electrolysis powered by solar and wind.

 

Terry concluded with the story of how his original interest in hydrogen was sparked over 25 years ago after a deep study of the challenges in decarbonizing transportation by relying on electric battery vehicles, and the need to look for alternatives. This prompted him to take an active role as Secretary of the California EPA under Arnold Schwarzenegger to launch the Hydrogen Highway Network which provided crucial support for building essential hydrogen infrastructure in California, and today boasts over 55 hydrogen refueling stations and around 15000 vehicles.
